Time may be given in hours and minutes similar to English.

Es ist ein Uhr fünfzehn.
Es ist fünfzehn Minuten nach eins.

Es ist ein Uhr fünfundvierzig.
Es ist fünfzehn Minuten vor zwei.

In contrast to English, German also uses the half hour as a reference point.

Old grandfather clocks and clocks in official towers have two different chimes:
(1) one indicating the full and quarter hours:
• one strike at the quarter hour after the full hour
•• two strikes at the half hour
••• three strikes at the quarter hour before the full hour
•••• four strikes before the full hour followed by

(2) the second chime which strikes the hour

The same pattern is found in hour glasses. For example, the two o'clock glass which is empty at one o'clock begins to fill up during the next sixty minutes until it is completely full at two o'clock.

In German, hours are separated from minutes by a period rather than a colon.

In official announcements, the 24 hour system is used.
