CHIEF ILLINIWEK CONTROVERY
Last Updated 4-7-00

I received the following message from H-Amindian, the H-net list serve on April 5, 2000:

Dear Fellow H-Amindian subscribers:

Recently, the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges completed
its once-every-ten-year review of the University of Illinois. While the NCA
recommended renewing the university's accreditation, it took special pains
to note that the university's decision to retain its American Indian
"symbol" and to continue to endorse the performances of white students
dressed as an imaginary "Chief Iliniwek" at athletic events falls "within
the purview of an accreditation review." After reviewing the facts of the
extensive controversy that has surrounded the "chief tradition," the NCA
report observed that "the institution appears not to be addressing the issue
in a manner consistent with some of the policies and principles of its
Board." The report went on to remind the institution that "it is the
responsibility of the leadership of the institution to create an environment
that will allow for resolution of the controversy in a manner consistent
with the principles of the North Central Association and the goals of the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign."

In response to the accrediting body's report, the University of Illinois
Board of Trustees has invited those concerned with the issue of the
university mascot or "symbol" to share their views with them. The board has
scheduled a public, on-campus "intake" session for April 14 and they have
invited comments to be submitted electronically by e-mailing:
dialogue@uillinois.edu. Comments submitted in writing will be received
until May 31.

My colleagues at the University of Illinois and I urge readers of this list
to take a few minutes to share their views on Chief Iliniwek with the
university's trustees. We would also be grateful if anyone who responds
would "cc" me (hoxie@uiuc.edu) so that I can have a list of who has written.
